Chris and the Negro boy go into the past of the town to foil a magician pirate who uses a poisoned whip. I do not remember author or title. It was about a young boy that like to canoe. I believe both were written and published pretty contemporaneously. I think it was a young adult book. I think it must be this one. A long shot, but it is a mystery set in Sturbridge, MA, so might be worth looking into. It has been revised and re-illustrated since, as well.
